The preparation

Successful home coloring: step by step

Before applying your hair coloring at home, it is very important to read the instructions.  Follow the steps to follow to the letter and be sure to do the sensitivity test 48 hours before using the product.

Step 1: Choosing The Hair Dye

Now you must choose your favorite tone.

For soft changes, prefer two shades lighter than the one you already have. If you want to make a radical change (for example: from brown to blonde), you must discolor your hair. For this, it is best to consult a professional.

The amount of the dye depends on the length of your hair. It is preferable to buy two or three boxes so that you can apply a good amount.

Here some useful tips on selecting the dye:

  1. Firstly, there are different types of dye: Dying agents for a short-term effect, semi-permanent dyes for a lasting effect for a couple of weeks, and finally a durable dye for long-term dyeing. Next, we will focus on resistant colors. In general, the types of dyes are also divided into categories: brightening, physical, chemical, and natural. The main difference of these dyes is the color palette, durability, and depth of penetration of the product into the hair.

Bonus :

  • brightening dyes remove melanin - the pigment from the hair. As a result, the hair becomes light;
  • chemical dyes are dangerous for allergy sufferers (plus you should carefully select the brand and  amount of dye);
  • physical dyes are tonics, foams, gels, etc., which give a temporary color, finally.
  • Natural Dye: This type of hair dye is made from the natural ingredients and does not harm the hair and skin. These natural hair dyes are not harmful to skin and have no side effects.

  1. Secondly, remember that professional colors can be with ammonia, without it or with low ammonia there are brightening colors, shades for light, brown, and dark hair. The choice of dye is up to you. The same goes for brand selection.
  2. Thirdly, if we are talking about durable dyes, it is primarily ammonia dyes. These dyes have a number of advantages: effective coloring of gray hair, resistant color lasts from 4 to 6 weeks. In general, such dyes give a very intensive effect. However, if your hair is thin or weak, it's best to choose a non-Semitic dye (even if it's less resistant).
  3. To avoid the risk, choose a shade that you already use. And if you've decided to experiment,  use the natural color.

Step 2. Let's pick up the tools

Dyeing your hair at home isn't that tricky. You can do it in a handy way. So, you've already picked out the dye and bought it. What else is there to prepare? Here's a little list for you:

  • a metal container;
  • protective equipment: Shoulder cape and gloves;
  • oily hand cream or vaseline;
  • micellar water, alcohol or make-up remover;
  • vitamin complex (purchased together with dye);
  • hair elastic bands;
  • hairbrush (always with a sharp end);
  • 4 plastic hair clips.

Step 3. Apply the color (monochrome)

First, let's talk about how to apply the right dye to your hair - it's very important. Here are some concise instructions to help you in this matter.

The preparatory phase

  • Prepare yourself before dyeing. That is: drink hot tea or coffee to warm up and improve blood circulation. It will affect the blood vessels of your skin.
  • Wear protective equipment, apply cream or petroleum jelly to such areas: ears, neck, hair growth line. What for? So you don't have to scrub and wash the extra dye later.
  • If you're a dye lover and don't know exactly your color. Do a little test: dye a separate strand of hair first. See what happens (you can only judge the result for the next 24 hours).
  • And if you've been there before and are sure of everything, take a metal container and mix the dye with a vitamin complex. This will protect your hair from burning out.

Coloring

  • Using a comb, divide the hair into four parts (the back of the head, two temples, and the forehead) and secure them with clips.
  • Apply dye over these parts. Start at the back of the head and move towards the forehead. The last ones to be dyed are the whiskey.
  • Remember that the dye is applied from the roots. Then move towards the tips of your hair.
  • How long do you have to wait after you've finished? Time counts from the moment you're completely finished with the dyeing. The specific exposure time depends on the color: you should look at this information on the box.
  • Clean the dye with micellar water, makeup remover, or alcohol.

Step 4. Two-tone staining

We're sure that you can handle monochrome coloring - there's nothing complicated and sophisticated there. But it's worth talking more about dual-tone. This method is suitable if you decide to try a new color or style, as well as if you just want to tint the roots or dye the gray hair. You'll need the same set as the one-tone coloring. The only thing is that you should have two boxes of dye on hand - light and darker.

  • Split your hair into four parts (just like you would with a monochrome dye). Fasten the parts with clips.
  • Split each part into four more parts. Fix the resulting “ponytails” with rubber bands.
  • Take a comb and separate 5-6 strands of each "tail". They should be thin.
  • Take out the thin strands and apply light dye to them.
  • When you apply the second - darker - dye you will have to choose how you want to dye: you can dissolve the "tails", or you can leave them. "Ponytails" can be dyed from the roots, pre-separating already dyed strands. With the second option to dye, the roots will not work, but the color will be distributed in a more interesting way.  The shades as if "stretched" along the length, you will get a gradation.
  • Wait for the proper time and wash off the dye.

Step 5. Haircare

Don't forget that after dyeing your hair needs care. This preserves the shade of the hair, as well as its health. Use a special product line for colored hair or choose children's shampoos. The fact that shampoos for dandruff or oily hair are not very suitable: they are ruthless to color. So do not forget about masks and conditioners for hair.

Generally cold, at most lukewarm water is used in salons to wash or moisturize hair. When someone asks what water to wash my hair with, the answer should always be cold water! The reason you will know by reading the effects that each brings to the hair. Here are some more tips to keep your hair moisturize your hair:

Hot water and its effects on Hair

  • The high temperature stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum, leaving the hair more oily at the root. Which can cause the fall and slow down natural growth.
  • It dries out the hair and attacks the hair keratin, which is sensitive to high temperatures.
  • It helps the hair swell, also making the hair more tangled than normal.
  • Due to the heat, the strands are left with cuticles open, so the hair is rough to the touch and dull.
  • It can help to break the thread if it is under heavier chemicals.

Coldwater and its effects on hair

  • The shine is nothing more than the reflection of light in the hair. Coldwater gives more shine, because with it the cuticles do not open, thus leaving the surface flat, and the flat surface reflects.
  • In dyed hair, cold water prevents rapid oxidation, so the color lasts longer in the hair.
  • It soothes the scalp and combined with massages, stimulates the growth and production of natural hydration in the scalp.
  • Maintains the natural oiliness of the scalp, avoiding dandruff, which is generated by fungi that proliferate with humidity and heat.
